Freud’s Division of the Psyche

Freud had initially divided our psyche into the conscious, pre-conscious and unconscious.  And although this division had helped explain a lot of psychological behavior, he abandoned the old topographical model and developed a new one: the id, ego and super-ego.

Freud still maintained that the different levels of the mind operated at the different consciousness levels, he found that the new division better explained how the mind works.

Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud was an Austrian psychiatrist known for his founding of the psychoanalytic school of psychology.  He is also well known for his theories on human sexual desire as the primary motivational factor in human life.   He is also known for his interpretation of dreams as a source of insight into the unconscious mind.

Freud calls dreams as “royal roadmap to the unconscious”.  In his “The Interpretation of Dreams” published in 1899, Freud suggests that the unconscious exists and dreams are a ways of gaining access to it.
